The Barrier to Entry: How I Got Past the Five-Year Experience Wall

As a developer, I'm aware that my industry is on fire. Software engineering went from the most in-demand profession at every level to something newcomers now approach half-jokingly, since a cluster of GPUs can outperform an entry-level "software engineer" on a surprising number of tasks. Finding a way through the "5+ years of experience" requirement for an entry-level position feels like an impossible task for the next generation. It took years to learn that the wall wasn't really about experience at all.

Finding the Path: Community College First

In high school, it was clear I excelled at programming, and that a career in it made more sense than most alternatives. I knew a computer science degree wasn't the same as being a software engineer, but I also knew I couldn't become one without it. Not coming from the richest background, I made the practical choice: fast-track an associate degree in computer science at Middlesex County College while tutoring on the side. It let me learn the material and learn to teach it at the same time.

Doing Everything "Right"

At Middlesex, I noticed something: several of my professors also taught at Monmouth or Rutgers universities. One told me directly, "I teach the same material here as I do at Monmouth, yet my students are more checked out, fail more often, and pay triple the price." That was not an argument for community college. It was an early lesson that value isn't derived from what you pay, but from how well you learn and apply your knowledge, a lesson I would relearn more than once. My classes at Middlesex never exceeded 21 students, and my professors were more engaged with me there than they were later at Rutgers.

As a junior at Rutgers, I knew I needed to start speed running experience. I reached out to every connection I had for internships, applied to anything with "software" or "engineer" in the title, started side projects with friends that we hoped might become something real, and even worked as an after-school teacher for grades 3 to 8. I did everything a young person is told to do to get ahead, and by most measures, I was succeeding. I landed an internship with a blockchain company, Blockade Games (now Blockade Labs), and learned React, Solidity, Python, and SQL. At the time, all of it looked like a clear path to success. I just needed to keep working the plan: study hard, ship side projects, and get the degree. A simple step-by-step formula that had worked for generations before mine.

It didn't work the way I expected.

The Wall

I graduated with two degrees, physics and computer science, and thought a job was all that stood between me and the career I'd been building toward. Instead, I spent 9 months sending out applications, customizing every cover letter, running multiple versions of my resume, and filtering for roles that matched me on paper. Everyone else was doing the same thing, and doing it with AI-assisted tools flooding the market at the same time. I was graduating into a post-COVID job market where a US salary had to compete with developers overseas who'd been coding since they were 12, for a fraction of the cost.

I held onto the belief that my degree entitled me to more, and I held onto it stubbornly for about a year. I kept building side projects and teaching, but I wasn't making a real breakthrough. Entry-level offers, when they came at all, were often thinly veiled scams or "data monkey" gigs. I learned to aim well below what I'd originally been told to expect.

Eventually, I stopped marketing myself as an "entry-level software engineer" and admitted that, functionally, I was a STEM and programming teacher who happened to also code. I applied to teaching adjacent companies such as Tutor.com and Concorde Education. Tutor.com made me feel less like a tutor and more like a DoorDash driver for homework help: solving strangers' problems in 30 to 60-minute windows for minimum wage, watching the clock between sessions. It wasn't the breakthrough.

Only when I applied for a tutoring position in Connecticut did a hiring manager at Concorde Education actually see my value. After my first interview, I learned it wasn't my software experience alone, but the combination of that with my teaching background, that made me their ideal candidate. I realized then that I, and many others chasing the same wall, had been looking in the wrong place. Technical promise and real niche expertise turned out to be worth more than years logged on paper.

Catching Up From Behind

Concorde Education hired me at the entry-level salary I'd been chasing, and my first real lesson was to listen. A business succeeds or fails on fundamentals, and ignoring them, especially as a new hire, is how you fail fast. Most business owners probably expect that from someone my age; failure is the best teacher, and in a growing company, there's no shortage of it.

The second lesson was staying in the loop, which sounds like listening but is harder. It means paying attention to what people around you actually need, then figuring out where you can add value beyond just following the standard. Without balancing the two, neither lesson works: pure compliance makes you a yes man, pure independence gets you fired for ignoring the people who hired you. I wasn't fired, but catching up to five years of missing experience while trying to be both reliable and useful was genuinely hard.

The third lesson, and the most important one, was to step back. You only learn from failure if you take the time to reflect on it. That realization eventually led me to leave that position and look for mentorship instead. I knew that without space to reflect on the mistakes I'd made over the previous two years, I wasn't going to keep growing. So I stepped away.

Reflection, Then Traction

By the time I left, I'd gotten genuinely good at project architecture, researching industry standards and applying them where they fit, taking feedback from my team, staying self-motivated, and leading other developers through a sprint. But leaving that environment for something more mentorship-focused, innovative, and collaborative made me realize how little time I'd actually had to sharpen my own craft. I'd been a team lead with limited experience, learning fast but cutting corners to keep up.

At MEDITECH, I spent a year building that balance deliberately, understanding the company's values, technology, and the people I worked with, rather than prioritizing shipping projects or features. Looking back at my previous role, I could see that even one more year of experience would have given me a real coding style and a repeatable way to research efficiently with modern tools. "Overcoming the wall" now seems far more manageable with a solid understanding of project decomposition, business fundamentals, and a genuine drive to keep studying. Studying in particular became fun, especially when working across legacy code and modern tech stacks requiring me to pull from internal documentation, search online, and, when that failed, ask AI the right questions. During work hours, I built internal developer tools and handled bugs and stories; off hours, I kept building extensions, side projects, and businesses, including Bibliophage, OptimizeMyListing, and Tutor MA, the last one built specifically to hand newer developers the shortcuts nobody handed me.

What Getting Past the Wall Actually Looked Like

Success looks different for everyone. For me, it's less about the penthouse and more about the strength of your career and the motivation to keep learning. I'm not living lavishly, but I have a house, a wife, a job, and, maybe most importantly, room to keep failing and trying again.

The five-year wall didn't disappear. I didn't out experience it. What actually got me past it was the same thing that broke through in Connecticut: discovering my niche of expertise, staying honest about what I actually knew, and leaning into technical promise instead of waiting to check every box on paper. Not everyone will appreciate your level of understanding or interests. But leaning into what makes you distinct is more likely to get you into a career that fits than waiting until you've technically qualified for it. That's the whole reason Tutor MA exists.
